Within the energetic framework used in this work, the chakras represent different themes of human experience. When observed in balance, they are traditionally associated with qualities such as presence, clarity, expression, and connection. In practice, this shows up as mental clarity to make decisions, an open heart that can give and receive affection without fear, and a deep sense of safety and grounding to walk through the world. Instead of spending strength suppressing emotions or fighting the stress of the day, we can welcome what we feel with wisdom and move on with vigour, lightness and authenticity.
Seven centres, seven themes
The chakras are the energy centres of the body, and each one is linked to a theme of life. In the illustration, from the top of the head to the base of the spine, the themes are: connection, intuition, truth, embrace, trust, flow and presence.
For each centre, three states can be observed: balanced, blocked or overactive. The descriptions below are the ones I use as a reference. They describe tendencies and patterns of experience, not diagnoses, and nobody fits one description all the time.
Crown · connection
The door of connection with the Divine, representing full awareness, integration with the Whole and higher spirituality.
- Balanced: connection with the Divine, deep peace, a sense of belonging to the universe, spiritual wisdom and a clear purpose. “I am one with the Universe.”
- Blocked: a feeling of spiritual helplessness, alienation, existential emptiness, excessive attachment to strictly material concepts and lack of faith. “I am alone in the universe.”
- Overactive: disconnection from practical life, spiritual fanaticism and escape from concrete reality. “The material world does not matter, only the spiritual.”
Third eye · intuition
The centre of perception and wisdom, governing intuition, discernment, mental clarity and seeing beyond the surface.
- Balanced: mental clarity, focus, sharp intuition, discernment, the ability to plan and inner wisdom. “I trust my intuition.”
- Blocked: mental confusion, lack of focus, rigid scepticism, disconnection from intuition and difficulty learning. “Only what is physically visible exists.”
- Overactive: an excess of thoughts and ruminating illusions. “I need to analyse every detail rationally.”
Throat · truth
The portal of expression and truth, responsible for clear communication, active listening and for manifesting our essence in the world.
- Balanced: clear and kind communication, authenticity, active listening, healthy positioning and verbal creativity. “I express my truth with clarity and love.”
- Blocked: difficulty expressing oneself, excessive shyness, swallowing feelings and fear of judgement. “What I have to say does not matter.”
- Overactive: aggressive communication, arrogance in speech, a tendency to gossip and being unable to listen. “My opinion is the only correct one.”
Heart · embrace
The bridge of love and compassion that unites matter and spirit, governing affection, acceptance and the ability to connect with others.
- Balanced: unconditional love, compassion, forgiveness, acceptance, life wisdom and inner peace. “I love and am loved.”
- Blocked: deep sadness, bitterness, accumulated hurt, fear of rejection and emotional closing. “Love is painful and dangerous.”
- Overactive: giving without limits, emotional dependency and anxiety for approval. “I need to save others to deserve love.”
Solar plexus · trust
The centre of personal strength and will, governing self-esteem, the power to act and the dynamism of the ego.
- Balanced: self-confidence, determination, clear boundaries, willpower, emotional intelligence and your own light. “I am capable and I honour my personal power.”
- Blocked: low self-esteem, a feeling of powerlessness, passivity and shame. “I am not good enough.”
- Overactive: authoritarianism, excessive control, anxiety, impatience and aggressiveness. “If I do not control everything, things will go wrong.”
Sacral · flow
The centre of pleasure and movement, governing our creativity, sexuality, emotions and ability to flow through life.
- Balanced: emotional fluidity, fertility, vitality, adaptability, self-acceptance and harmonious relationships. “I deserve to feel pleasure.”
- Blocked: creative and sexual blocks, guilt, shame, apathy, isolation and low self-esteem. “Feeling pleasure or emotions is dangerous or wrong.”
- Overactive: emotional hypersensitivity, emotional dependency and a compulsive search for pleasure or attachment. “My happiness depends on immediate pleasure and on the other person.”
Root · presence
Our root of support, responsible for the sense of safety, anchoring and physical survival on earth.
- Balanced: vigour, practical strength, grounding, acceptance of reality, connection with the material world and stability. “I am safe in the material world.”
- Blocked: a feeling of lack, visceral survival fears, demotivation and stagnation in materialising things. “I do not have enough to survive.”
- Overactive: excessive material attachment, defensive or aggressive behaviour, greed and compulsive hoarding. “I need to accumulate and control everything to protect myself.”
The aim is not to label, but to bring light to what your field is asking for in the moment.
How I read the chakras in a session
In an Energy Alignment session, the chakras are one of the things I map with dowsing. The pendulum works as a visual pointer for questions such as “does this chakra show any imbalance?”, and the answers help me see where the energy may be blocked, in excess or stagnant. Together with the balance of Yin and Yang, it forms a map of the moment you are in.
Our work is not to change your emotions or your energy, but to recognise where you are and what you need right now, on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels.
Looking after your centres day to day
A session is only one way of looking after your energy field. The best way is to get to know yourself, so you can feel and give your field what it needs at each moment: rest, water, fun, time with the people we love, knowledge, silence. In the material I share after the sessions there are also suggestions of practices for different moments, including a guided meditation for balancing the chakras.
